NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament
BIG 12 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SENDS SEVEN TEAMS TO NCAA TOURNAMENT
Seven Big 12 women's basketball teams will represent the conference in the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship for the second consecutive year.
Oklahoma earned the league's automatic berth after winning the Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament. The Sooners also won the Big 12 regular season title. Joining OU in the NCAA Tournament field are Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas State, Texas and Texas Tech.
Only the SEC had more teams invited to the Big Dance with eight, however the Big 12 leads all other conferences with all seven of its teams garnering top four seeds and earning the right to host first and second round games.
OU enters the 2002 tournament with the top seed in the West region. The Big 12 has had only one other top seed in its six-year history. Texas Tech was the number one seed in the Midwest in 1998. Colorado and Texas Tech are also in the West region with the third and fourth seeds, respectively.
Baylor earned a number two seed in the East region and Texas got the fourth seed in the East. Kansas State is the number three seed in the Mideast and Iowa State is the three seed in the Midwest. In addition to hosting a subregional, Iowa State will also host the Midwest Regional on March 23 and 25.
The Big 12's seven NCAA Tournament bids tie the all-time league high from 2001. The Big 12 had six teams selected on two occasions. Seven teams hosting first and second rounds is a Big 12 Conference record.
